The St. Louis Chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association commissioned the sculpture of the St. Louis Cardinals’ great batter Stan “The Man” Musial. Musial was known for his hitting prowess as well as being a modest and sportsmanlike player, and the statue as originally conceived was to memorialize that kindness: Musial signing autographs for a young fan. But limited funds mandated an alternate: Musial at bat. True baseball fans may debate the accuracy of the statue’s depiction of the famous Musial batting stance. Just north of Musial is the Cardinals “Plaza of Champions,” featuring nine more sculptures of past Cardinal Hall of Famers in action, all by local sculptor Harry Weber.
