Namahyoke Sockum Curtis stands out in history as a pioneering American nurse whose remarkable contributions during the Spanish American War changed the landscape of nursing in the military. Driven by her commitment to healthcare and her community, she successfully recruited 32 African-American nurses to serve alongside the US Army in Cuba, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations in the field.

Join storyteller Carole Shelton as she shares the inspiring story of Curtis’s dedication, courage, and the vital role she played in caring for soldiers during a tumultuous time in American history.
