ALERT: The Gateway Arch Ticketing & Visitor Center has relocated to the Old Courthouse at 11 N. 4th Street. The walking distance between the Old Courthouse and the Arch entrance at the SOUTH leg is approximately 0.3 miles (7 minutes of average walking time). EACH guest planning to enter the Gateway Arch will be required to have EITHER a Journey to the Top ticket or an Arch Entry-Only ticket to be allowed access to the facility.  Tram tickets will sell out early and often - advance tickets are strongly recommended.

Please Note: The Museum of Westward Expansion, located under the Gateway Arch is closed for significant renovations. Certain artifacts from the Museum are on display in exhibit galleries at the Old Courthouse.


Old Courthouse

Begin your experience by exploring the Old Courthouse, a historical landmark where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for freedom from slavery and Virginia Minor fought for women’s right to vote. Explore exhibits describing how St. Louis served as a hub for early settlers moving west.

Please Note: During construction, the Old Courthouse will also serve as a temporary Ticketing and Visitor Center for the Gateway Arch.


Explore a significant part of U.S. history when you visit the Old Courthouse, which was built between 1839 and 1862. Tour this architectural masterpiece with restored courtrooms and experience a time and place where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom and Virginia Minor fought for women’s right to vote. Through special exhibits, learn about St. Louis’ role in early settlers’ movement into western America.

At the Old Courthouse Gift Shop, choose from a wide selection of books, videos, apparel and educational toys related to St. Louis and African-American history.

Located just two blocks from the Arch, the Old Courthouse will serve as the temporary Ticketing and Visitor Center for the Gateway Arch during construction.

Junior Ranger Program offered by the National Park Service

Most of the first floor of the Old Courthouse is accessible to wheelchairs. On the first floor, it is necessary to climb two stairs to enter the theater or the Museum Shop. The upper floors of the Old Courthouse are reachable only by climbing stairs.
