I’m Turning 60, and I’m Ready to Celebrate!

It’s hard to believe it’s been six decades since that final; shimmering piece was lifted into place. I remember that day like it was yesterday; the sun glinting off the stainless steel, the cheers from the crowd, the sense of completion. It was a momentous occasion, and now, it’s time to celebrate again. My friends at Gateway Arch National Park are throwing a four-day celebration just for me, and I want you to be a part of it. From Saturday, October 25 to Tuesday, October 28, we’ll have a schedule full of fun.
My birthday party starts on Saturday, October 25, which we’re calling “Builder’s Day.” It’s a day to honor the people who poured their heart and soul into creating me. From 10 am to 12 pm, some of the original builders will be here to share their stories and even autograph posters. Imagine hearing firsthand what it was like to work hundreds of feet in the air, connecting the pieces that would become my iconic curve. It’s a chance to meet the people who made history, a living connection to the past. The day won’t just be about looking back, though. At 10 am, you can join Just Breathe STL Yoga led by The Collective, offering a moment of peace and reflection beneath my magnificent span. And to top it all off, at 7 pm, we’ll light up the sky with a spectacular firework show over the Mississippi River, presented by the Missouri Department of Tourism and the Gateway Arch Park Foundation.
Then comes Sunday, October 26: “Family Day.” I love seeing families gather here, kids running across the grass and pointing up at my peak. This day is all about celebrating that joy. From 10 am to 2 pm, artist Jillian Kaye will be available to create special sketches of visitors, a perfect keepsake from our celebration. At 10:30 am and again at 12:30 pm, the high-flying St. Louis Arches from Circus Harmony will put on a performance that will make you gasp and cheer. I’ve seen them practice, and trust me, they’re incredible! From 12 pm to 1 pm, some of St. Louis’s favorite mascots will make a special appearance for photo opportunities. And as the sun sets, you can join my Star Ranger at 6:30 pm for a “Gateway to the Stars: Ghosts of the Arch Grounds” tour, where you’ll learn about the historical figures and stories connected to this national park. Just remember, registration is required for the evening tour, so be sure to secure your spot online.
On Monday, October 27, we’ll focus on “Career Day.” It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to keep a national park running smoothly, and this day is dedicated to the people who make it all happen. From 10 am to 2 pm, you can meet the staff from Gateway Arch National Park and park partners. They’ll be available to talk about what it takes to manage the park, preserve its history, and educate the public. Whether you’re a student thinking about a career in conservation or just curious about the day-to-day operations of a national park, this is your chance to get a behind-the-scenes look and ask questions.
Finally, the big day arrives on Tuesday, October 28. This is my actual birthday, the 60th anniversary of the day that last piece was installed. My grounds will be buzzing with energy and celebration from 9 am to 2 pm. The Columbia, IL high school band will perform at 9:30 am, followed by a performance from the Scott Air Force band from 10 am to 2 pm. You can also enjoy food from a variety of food trucks from 11 am to 2 pm. This day is a true party!
And if you want to make the day even more special, you can take a Tram Ride to the Top. It’s a tradition, and on my birthday, it comes with a special perk: you’ll become an exclusive member of the Tram Ride to the Top Club, complete with a commemorative button and certificate. Just a heads-up, tickets are required for the ride and are expected to sell out, so it’s a good idea to purchase them in advance.
While you’re here celebrating with me, be sure to head over to the Old Courthouse to check out a special exhibit, opening in October, all about me! It’s called “Hey, There’s the Arch,” and it’s a collection of all sorts of things with my likeness on them, from old logos to marketing materials. I love seeing all the creative ways I’ve been a part of St. Louis culture over the years. This exhibit is a great way to experience a different side of my history, and it’s just a short walk away. Come see how many times you can spot me!
